How to Adjust a Copper Bracelet or a Magnetic Bangle: Step-by-Step Guide

Copper bracelets and magnetic bangles are timeless accessories, favoured not just for their classic look but also for their purported wellness benefits. However, to get the most out of your jewellery, it needs to fit comfortably against your skin.

Because copper is a malleable metal, adjusting your bangle to the perfect size is remarkably easy to do at home—provided you follow the correct technique to avoid misshaping or damaging it.

Here is our simple, step-by-step guide to achieving the perfect fit.

Step 1: Check the Initial Fit

Before making any adjustments, slip the bangle onto your wrist.

  • The Golden Rule: A magnetic or copper bracelet should fit snugly against your skin, but it shouldn't pinch, dig in, or cut off your circulation.
  • If it is a magnetic bangle, the magnets should ideally make gentle contact with your skin to work effectively.

Step 2: How to Resize (Squeeze or Expand)

Because copper is naturally flexible, you do not need any specialist tools. You can use the natural contour of your hand to keep the bracelet's symmetrical shape.

To Make It Smaller:

  • Place the bangle on your wrist.
  • Cup your hand over the outside of the bracelet.
  • Apply gentle, even pressure inward from both sides simultaneously.
  • Tip: Avoid squeezing just the ends together, as this can distort the beautiful curve of the metal into an awkward oval shape.

To Make It Larger:

  • Take the bracelet off your wrist.
  • Grip the center of the bangle with one hand, and gently pull the two open ends outward with your other hand.
  • Work slowly, expanding it a millimetre at a millimetre, until it slips comfortably over your wrist.

Step 3: Getting the Perfect Gap

A properly adjusted cuff or bangle should have a small gap between the two ends. This gap allows you to slip the bracelet on and off easily without needing to reshape it every single time you wear it.

How to Put On and Remove Your Bangle Safely

To ensure your jewellery lasts for years to come, avoid constantly bending it open and closed. Instead, use the "roll" technique:

  • To put it on: Turn your arm sideways so your wrist is vertical. Slide the opening of the bangle over the narrowest part of your wrist (just above the wrist bone), then rotate the bangle so it sits properly.

  • To take it off: Simply rotate the bangle so the opening faces the narrow side of your wrist, and slide it gently off.

Care Note: Genuine copper will naturally oxidise over time, leaving a beautiful antique patina or a slight green residue on the skin (which is completely harmless and washes off with soap and water). To keep it shining, simply polish it occasionally with a soft cloth and a bit of lemon juice or specialist copper cleaner.
